A member of the CVMBS faculty since 1995, Erica Suchman teaches microbiology. Winner of the 2000-2001 N. Preston Davis Award for Instructional Innovation and an inductee into the George H. Glover Distinguished Contemporary Faculty Gallery, Dr. Suchman is an internationally recognized expert and lecturer on using active learning techniques to foster critical thinking skills while teaching science in large lecture halls.

Dr. Suchman served as the chairman of the Committee on Technology Enhanced Education for the American Society of Microbiology, and the Editor-in-chief of the MicrobeLibrary, the American Society of Microbiology's web based peer reviewed education resource collection from 2003-2012. She is also a member of both the ASM Education Board and ASM committee on International Education.

Research Interests

  • Using active learning to augment undergraduate learning in large lecture microbiology courses.
  • The study of Densonucleosis viruses, parvo viruses that infect mosquitoes, as possible biological control agent to reduce the vectoral capacity of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, vector for Dengue fever virus. Research conducted in collaboration with Dr. Jon Carlson.
